About the PNW District Awards

Prizes and Awards Committee Members

Terms of office run concurrently with the District Director term.  Here's a list of the PNW District Contacts. 

There are several recognition awards at the District Level for outstanding service to the district.  Each award, and its process for nomination and voting, is outlined below. 

Silver Honor Medal

This is the highest District award given by the American Rose Society and is one of three: The Bronze Award (for local society service), and the Gold Award (for national ARS service) are the other two. 
 

The Silver Honor process begins with a call for nominations in early March, received from the District’s Prizes and Awards Committee members, who represent each local society.  Your P&A committee member should be consulting with their local society Board of Directors and/or membership for appropriate nominations.  Any P&A member can nominate anyone in the district. The list of candidates is then compiled, and ballots are sent out to all P&A members for voting in April.  Votes are returned, and the winner is determined based on specific rules of the ARS: 

• All nominees must be ARS members. 
• All nominees must live within the District (or, if the person has moved away, he/she must have lived within the District for at least 6 months of the previous year).  The Award can be given posthumously, provided he/she lived within the District for at least 6 months of the previous year. 
• At least 2/3rds of the P&A committee must return their vote. 
• The winning candidate must receive 50% of the votes cast.  If less, the top two candidates go out again to the P&A committee for further balloting until one candidate receives 50% of the votes. 

As you can see, it’s really important for ALL P&A committee members to return a vote, even if it’s a vote for “No medal to be awarded,” which is required to also be on the ballot.

Outstanding Consulting Rosarian
  

This is the highest District award for Consulting Rosarian work, also awarded by the ARS:

• All nominees must be ARS members. 
• All nominees must live within the District (or, if the person has moved away, he/she must have lived within the District for at least 6 months of the previous year).  The Award can be given posthumously, provided he/she lived within the District for at least 6 months of the previous year. 
• All nominees would have been active within the position for at least ten years.  This includes, but is not limited to: 
• • Participation in local society activities (such as rose clinics, speaking at meetings, writing articles for newsletters, etc.). 
  • Demonstration of competency in all knowledge areas of local rose culture. 
  • Service as a faculty member of a CR school or audit, or rose culture workshop. 
  • Demonstration of a willingness to share knowledge with people who exhibit interest. 
  • Wholehearted support of the ARS. 

The call for nominations goes out to the P&A committee members in March.  They consult with their local Board of Directors and/or local CRs for suggested nominations. Nominations are received back, compiled, and sent to the CR chair(s) for approval of eligibility.  P&A committee members and appointed District Board members are eligible for the award.  Outstanding Consulting Rosarian Nominee Form

A separate committee selects the recipient.  Committee members are: 

• District Director 
• District Chair(s) of Consulting Rosarians 
• District Chair of Awards

Outstanding Judges Award
  

This is the highest District judging award, also awarded by the ARS:

• All nominees must be ARS members. 
• All nominees must live within the District (or, if the person has moved away, he/she must have lived within the District for at least 6 months of the previous year).  The Award can be given posthumously, provided he/she lived within the District for at least 6 months of the previous year. 
• All nominees would have been active within the position for at least ten years.  This includes, but is not limited to: 
• • Participation in rose show activities in various areas of the District. 
  • A reputation for the highest quality of judging. 
  • Demonstration of competency in judging all rose classifications. 
  • Service as a faculty member of a Judging school, audit, or workshop. 
  • Demonstration of a willingness to share knowledge with exhibitors after judging a show. 
  • Wholehearted support of the ARS. 

Call for nominations goes out to the P&A committee members in March.  If the society has a judged show, the P&A rep asks the Chair of Judges for a nomination  If the society has a non-judged rose display (or no rose show), the P&A rep can discuss the nomination with knowledgeable members of the society. Nominations are received back, compiled, and sent to the judging chair(s) for approval of eligibility. • District Director 
• District Chair(s) of Horticulture Judges 
• District Chair of Arrangement Judges 
• District Chair of Awards 

P&A committee members and appointed District Board members are eligible for the award.

Lifetime Achievement Award
  

This award is for a high level of contribution to the PNW District over a number of years.  Although there are few requirements, a nominee would probably have been a local society board member or a rose show chair. A nominee would probably have attended the annual Fall Conference meetings, the District Conventions and/or Rose Shows.  He/She might have been elected or appointed to District-level positions.  He/She might be a judge (either horticulture or arrangement), or a Consulting Rosarian, or even a Master Rosarian.  A nominee might even have received the ARS Bronze and/or Silver Honor awards.  The only actual requirements are:

• All nominees must be ARS members.  
• All nominees must belong to a local society within the PNW District.
